What to Expect If You Enroll in CREST-2

What will happen in this study?
If you are interested in participating in CREST-2, you will be asked to come to a local CREST-2 center:
  • For further tests to assess your eligibility
  • To answer questions about your medical history
  • To learn more about the study

If you choose to participate, you will:
  • Receive medical management for your specific stroke risk factors
  • Have the opportunity to decide with your physician whether CEA or CAS would be the preferred procedure for you
  • Be randomly selected to receive either the medical management alone, or to receive either the CEA or CAS procedure in addition to medical management

After the procedure you will need to return to your CREST-2 center for follow-up exams at:
  • 1 Month
  • 4 months
  • 8 months
  • 12 months
  • Every 6 months thereafter for up to 4 years

An important part of this study is to see how treatment of your carotid artery disease might affect your thinking (cognition).  Research staff at the University of Alabama at Birmingham will contact you by telephone to complete a 20-minute cognitive testing session.  You will be called at:
  • Initial screening visit
  • 1 month
  • Every 12 months thereafter up to 4 years
